Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
